Strata Solar ready to power up 750 homes in Durham
Markus Wilhelm heads Chapel Hill's Strata Solar, one of the largest solar companies in the country.
Chapel Hill-based solar energy company Strata Solar will install the last panel on its solar farm today, completing the construction of Durham County’s largest solar farm yet.
On 43 acres, these solar panels will generate 6.4 megawatts; enough to power 750 homes. Over 90 construction workers put the pieces together over the course of about four months. This brings Strata Solar’s solar farm count to 55 across the state. Currently, 8 other solar farms are in the works.
The Mile Solar Farm in Rougemont will be christened this morning as the last panel is installed, with Rep. Howard Coble present along with John Morrison, chief operating officer of Strata Solar.
The farm is expected to generate power by June, and the company aims to bring 300 more megawatts-worth of farms online by the end of the year. In doing so, the company will focus on creating as many local jobs as possible.
“Strata Solar has been implementing a 'local cluster' employment strategy – we train our workforce and try to relocate it locally within job clusters,” says Morrison. “We aim to develop projects in areas that would allow our construction team to move from one site to another but still not far from their homes. This also enables our employees to turn temporary contract jobs into full-time employment and develop their skills, resulting in promotions.”
